Realising that it has been one hundred years since the planet Sigma Iotia II was visited, the Federation sends the U.S.S. Enterprise to observe the progress of the population. But when Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Commander Spock and Doctor McCoy beam down to the surface, instead of finding a society similar to the one reported by the U.S.S. Horizon, they are amazed to find a gangster society exactly like Earth in the 1920s. The Starfleet officers are immediately captured by a gang of hoods and taken to meet one of the planet’s major leaders, a mobster named Bela Oxmyx. Bela plans to unite the population under his rule, and offers Kirk "a piece of the action" in exchange for the Enterprise’s technologically advanced weaponry. After Kirk refuses, he, Spock and McCoy are then captured by Bela’s rival gangster, Jojo Krako. The captain creates a diversion by playing a card game known as ‘fizzbin’, enabling him and his associates to escape. In order to complete their mission, Kirk, Spock and McCoy become ‘mobsters’, dressing the part and struggling to speak in gangster slang. Meanwhile, Bela Oxmyx inadvertently uses one of their communicators and ends up in the Enterprise transporter room, where he is held captive. Can Kirk unite the two rival gangs before he gets caught in the crossfire? Who will become the Godfather? And who left behind a book called ‘Chicago Mobs of the Twenties’??
